Selling Tutorials

So lately I’ve been thinking about making some clay tutorials to sell.

I get so many questions for alot of my secret techniques that I thought I might just make a few tuts to sell and show people how I make some of my more intricate pieces.

Some tutorials I was thinking about making are like:

Nontoxic alternative to resin pendants – I made this discovery in the easiest products and its really amazing. Also an amazing product that makes resin pendant in 5 minutes and its pretty much nontoxic as well.

For deco – A glue tutorial especially how to glue silicone to metal and to cabochons both resin and clay – yes it is possible and yes the glue is cheap and available pretty much worldwide in most countries. I’ve tested it for about half a year and it holds up and I also got confirmation from the company that it wont have a chemical reaction with silicone or clay down the line so its perfect.

maybe even just a decoden starter tutorial with some of my secret products that I’ve never shared and none of the secret products I use have been mentioned at all in any deco blogs

A realistic texturing tutorial

and maybe a tutorial on transparent glazes and mediums

and a tutorial on waterproofing clay and cabochons or just waterproof materials that can be used for deco. Hmm this one I could probably just turn a tut into making durable waterproof jewelry I think that would be better.

these are probably the most common requests I get. To be honest I have spent hundreds of dollars on different craft products that I’ve tested. Selling these tuts might be a good way for me to recoop some of that money.

The only thing that worries me if I sell my secrets I’ll have alot more competition or people might just give away my info. So I dont know what Im going to do yet.

I dont know how many people would be interested but its a thought Im having.

Hmmmm… Yeah I can understand that you’ve spent a lot of money trying to find perfect methods for your crating and I think it would be a good idea to sell tutorials like this. But on the other hand it’s hard to control the informations, especially on the internet. It’s kind of sad but it’s true… I mean you can’t stop people talking between each other. You would have to patent the information or something…

I have to be honest that I would love to pay for info on how to glue things to silicone and how to make air dry clay waterproof! :D

But some people might just buy it as a group and share it between each other. So as a fellow crafter and seller I think it would be the best for you to keep it for yourself… (I can’t believe that I’m saying that! :D ) If what you’ve discovered works, then it could be priceless :)

And btw people could be susppicious paying money for tutorials and not being sure if they’d work….

thanks for the input and yeah I havent decided what to do for the same reasons you mentioned

if I do decide to sell them , my customers trust me and my feedback shows Im trust worthy that I would never sell a technique that did not work.

If anything I have more people willing to buy because they know my techniques do work from all the tutorials I post using unique ideas and non conventional products. I would just be worried about people giving away my tips for free.

I’m sorry if this sound like I say that people wouldnt tryst you! I didn’t mean that. I have never bought any tutorial so if I’d had to do that I would consider doing it, when not knowing the seller. But if your customers trust you, then it’s priceless and I know that they won’t regret that :)

And I agree, people would just talk between each other about that…

I think your blog speaks for itself! I wouldn’t worry too much about people not trusting you…
It’s obvious your blog shows all of your hard work and not to mention hundreds of dollars you’ve spent experimenting and perfecting various techniques. I know I would buy some lessons from you :) Especially the resin alternative. My sinuses are really sensitive and harsh fumes leave me miserable for a couple days.

On another note though, I agree too that some people might spread it out; maybe you could post it somewhere for a limited time and erase it later? or broadcast it live for a couple of sessions?
sigh. It gets quite tricky over the internet.

I think you should maybe offer it to people that visit your blog; perhaps you can do a trade with them so they won’t be that willing to share/resell the info from your hard work. You could trade crafts, books, or techniques. I would love to buy your tutorials because I know they would work!
